Detección de anticuerpos y virus de la diarrea viral bovina en alpacas durante una campaña reproductiva.

The possible association of bovine viral diarrhea virus (VDVB) and reproductive failure (embryonic reabsorption and/or abortions) was monitored in 157 pregnant and 52 open Alpacas at the Marangani (Cuzco) research station of the Veterinary Institute for Tropical and High Altitude Reasearch. The entire female population was monitored for presence of neutralizing antibodies (VN test) and/or virus in sera samples at the beginning (May) and the end (October) of the gestation period. None of the animals tested had evidence for antibodies or circulating pestivirus. Analysis of the breeding program revealed that of 25,5% of pregnant females failed to produce live offspring. A total of 6 aborted fetuses were recorded and it is thought that the reminder had fertilization failure or emhryonic mortality. These findings rule out BVDV as a cause of reproductive failure in this alpaca herd.
